lyrics

This musical toast written by Bob Dylan is the song Bert has sung far more than any other. Even more than Happy Birthday. It doesn’t need a band, it just needs a guitar and a friend becoming a little less young. In this live recording at Sabala’s in Portland Oregon, Bert is singing to the young Lil Kingery (“may your hands always be painting”). She is now Lillian Malek, and has an album of her own you should check out - also on Manhole Music. Also in this recording, the man who played guitar for Bob Dylan - GE Smith - takes a passionate solo. The impact GE had on the FOBs cannot be overstated. He’s on all but two of the tracks on Bert’s Brew.

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others, and let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung
And may you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young, may you stay forever young

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong
And may you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young, may you stay forever young

May your hands always be painting
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful and your song always be sung
And may you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young, may you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young, may you stay forever young
